A Quick Workaround for Error 1336 in McAfee Endpoint Security (ENS) 10.5.2

It has been noticed in the recent months that, while upgrading to McAfee Endpoint Security 10.5.2 or after downloading it from mcafee.com/activate, an error occurs while creating a temporary file that is required for the process. This error causes an MSI pop-up error. In this error, the installation stands successful, but the software occasionally gets a pop-up that reads, “Error 1336. There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation.”

In this blog, we are going to tell you a simple workaround to solve this issue. First look at the cause of this error after downloading McAfee antivirus from www.mcafee.com/activate:

“C:\Program Files[(x86)]\McAfee\Endpoint Security\Threat Prevention\IPS\HipHandlers64.dll is not present”

The above error shows because of the file missing from the IPS directory. As a result, MSI attempts to repair the installation and fails because of a lack of permission.

Solution to Error 1336

The issue has been resolved in the latest update of McAfee ENS, i.e. McAfee Endpoint Security 10.5.3. This latest version can be downloaded from the antivirus’ official website where McAfee activate process is performed. To resolve the Error 1336:

1. Disable ENS Self Protection. From the ENS console, locate Settings, and then Common. Now, disable Self-protection.

2. Click Update now in the ENS console. Now, wait for the update to complete.

3. After the update, enable ENS Self Protection again.
